Photographs of the Finals Day are now available in the Gallery

The Wilson Cup Finals Day was on Saturday 8th May.  The weather was kind being dry and cool in the morning, improving to sunny and warm in the afternoon.
Play commenced at 10.00am and all events ran smoothly with some excellent performances from the competitors.
Sunday’s Well beat Kilworth 3-1 in the first Semi-Final and Bishopstown beat Whitechuch 3-1 in the other.
Sunday’s Well and Bishopstown contested the final and eventually tied at 2 matches each.  The deciding match was a Mixed Super Doubles which was very close with Bishopstown triumphing over the holders Sunday’s Well who have been the winners of this event for the past number of years.  Whitechurch went on to beat Kilworth 3-1 in the play-off for 3rd place.
It was a very long but enjoyable day, culminating at 6pm with Prizegiving. Lunch and refreshments were provided throughout the day and the feedback from the competitors and their supporters was very positive.
A big t
hank you must go to Sheila Stokes for her organising skills on the day, Stephanie Stokes, Tom Noonan and Verona Noonan for feeding everyone at lunch-time and Ken Murphy for his work in running the Tournament and scheduling the matches for finals day.
Prizes were presented to the winners by the sponsor Eric Wilson, of Wilson Lock & Safe. Thank you Eric for your continuing support of this tournament.

Wilson Cup Background

Good fun with a competitive edge, and the need to keep our juniors interested during off-season, was the inspiration for the formation of both the Wilson (formerly Casey Cup) and KBS (formerly OK Cup) Junior competitions. Both events have being going strong now since the early 90’s and were the brainchild of founder members of Carrigaline Tennis Club who still oversee the running of both events annually.

The Wilson cup is a team event for under 12’s and under 14’s while the KBS is for the under 16 age group. The success of both events has been based on the theme of fairness and this has been managed by controlling the entrants each year. Both Cups are effectively winter leagues for juniors who may be a level below Munster squad status.  Previous years tournaments winners are excluded from playing to ensure that those who do take part have a fair chance of doing well in their event. If this can be achieved every year, then the hope would be that more kids will be encouraged to stay playing tennis in addition to the many other sports they will experience in the early years of life.

The Wilson Cup runs from Late November to May each year and the KBS Cup runs from March through May. The finals for both events are hosted by Carrigaline Tennis club every year just after the GSK singles tournament which is held over the May weekend. Carrigaline Tennis Club are delighted with the success of both events over the years and look forward to being involved with Junior Tennis in Cork for many more years to come.

The Semi-Finals and Finals will take place in Carrigaline on Saturday 8th May 2010.

The club would like to sincerely thank Wilson Lock & Safe, for their continuing support and sponsorship of what is regarded as one of the premier junior competitions in the Cork Tennis Calendar.
Wilson Lock & Safe a local Carrigaline Company based in The Old Mills, Old Waterpark, Carrigaline offers a variety of locksmith services, including lock repairs, sales and installation of locking systems, safes and access control systems to both residential and commercial customers. Carrigaline are drawn in section B with Kilworth A, and Bishopstown.  Ardfield and Youghal pulled out of the competition due to insufficient numbers of players.

The Carrigaline team is:
U12 girls –Sophie Crumplin and Hannah Shalloo
U12 boys –Andrew Dunlea and Ronan Corkery
U14 girls – Stephanie Corkery and Kate Maxwell
U14 Boys –Sam Crumplin and Daniel O’Flaherty

The first fixture for Carrigaline was away to Kilworth A. The team came up against strong opposition. Sam and Andrew played U14 and Ronan and Daniel under played U12.  All the boys had tough matches with Ronan and Daniel winning in three sets and Sam and Andrew losing in the third set.
Both girls teams were beaten so the final result was 3 points to Kilworth A and 1 point to Carrigaline.
The return match against Kilworth at home produced a better result. Ronan and Andrew won the U12 Boys in two sets and Sam and Daniel won the U14 Boys again in two sets.  Kilworth won both the girls matchs so each team came away with 2 points from the match.

The away match to Bishopstown also resulted in 2 points each.  This time the U14 girls, Kate and Stephanie, won their match and the U14 boys, Sam and Daniel, won theirs.
