GlaxoSmithKline May Weekend Junior Tournament

With almost eighty young
competitors from twenty clubs throughout Munster the GSK sponsored Junior Singles
Tournament is as strong an event as ever on the Junior Calendar. Events
were held for both Boys and Girls in the U12, U14 & U16 age groups.
A plate event was also run in each category. Spectators
enjoyed some great performances from the young players over the May Bank Holiday
Weekend.
Marian Healy and her
dedicated team looked after the troops and kept them well fed
over the four days. Thanks to their commitment a full
kitchen service was in operation with Tasty Treats for the kids and
something a little more substantial for the proud parents watching on.
Thanks to Marian and all her helpers.
On the organisational side a
big thank you is due to Brian Walsh, Frank O'Sullivan, Ken Murphy, Mark Cunninghan, Sheila Stokes and all those who made themselves available
to act as court supervisors.
The Club would like to
thank local company GlaxoSmithKline for their continued support and all the players
and parents for their participation in yet another
great weekend of Junior tennis.

KBS
Cup -Update
Carrigaline played
Rushbrooke at home on Sunday 18th April 2010. At their previous
meeting Carrigaline won the match 3 – 0. Rushbrooke fielded a
different team this time around and Carrigaline lost the two
singles games. Daire O’Mahony and Kate Williams won the mixed
doubles while Kevin Harrington and Stephanie Corkery lost their
singles match. However, it transpired that the Girls Singles
player for Rushbrooke was ineligible to play so Carrigaline were
awarded the point for that match giving a final tally of 2 – 1
to Carrigaline.
The team played
Ballinlough last Sunday, 25th April 2010. Whilst this was due
to be an away fixture for Carrigaline, Ballinlough travelled to
Carrigaline as their courts were not available. The previous
match with Ballinlough was lost 3 – 0 in windy conditions but
the team triumphed yesterday with a 2 – 1 win. Stephanie won
the girls singles and Kate and Daire won the mixed. Kevin had a
really close match, the second set going to a tie break, but
unfortunately he came out on the losing side.
The final match against
Mallow B will probably be played over the weekend of 8th
May 2010 due to the GSK Junior Open taking place over the May
Bank Holiday Weekend.
Ballinlough have two
fixtures to play, their home and away matches against Rushbrooke.
Ballinlough were on full points until the match yesterday so
they are the ones to beat. The outcome will depend on their
results against Rushbrooke and on whether Carrigaline can take
full points against Mallow B at home.

KBS Cup
The KBS Team travelled
to Mallow last Thursday, 8th April 2010, and had a
clean sweep over MallowB winning all three matches. Whilst the
results would suggest the team had an easy run, the games were
actually very close and all the players were on court for well
over an hour even though all the matches were won in just two
sets. Kevin Harrington, playing the Boys Singles, was on court
for over an hour and a half eventually winning 6 -1, 6 -2. Kate
Williams and Daire O’Mahony won the Mixed Doubles 6 -1; 6 -1 and
Stephanie Corkery won the Girls Singles 6 -2; 6 -1. Mallow were
lovely hosts and the team look forward to returning their
hospitality when they travel to Carrigaline for the home
fixture.
Thanks to the team for travelling to Mallow during their Easter
Holidays!
The next fixture, at home to Rushbrooke, is to be played by
Sunday 18th April.
......................................................................................................
After a very good start
against Rushbrooke, Carrigaline lost three 3 matches to
Ballinlough at home on Wednesday 31st March 2010. All the
matches were very close and could have gone either way,
especially the singles. It was very windy and not the best
weather for tennis. Hopefully the team will do better on the
return fixture. The next match is away to Mallow B and is to be
played by 11th April 2010.
....................................................................................................
The Carrigaline team of Kate Williams, Stephanie Corkery,
Kevin Harrington and Daire O’Mahony travelled to Rushbrooke last
Sunday to play their first match in this tournament. The team
had a very success win over their hosts.
Results are as follows, Carrigaline names first.
Boys U16 Singles: Kevin Harrington v Brendan O’Driscoll 6-0,
6-0
Girls U16 Singles: Stephanie Corkery v Claudia Dowling 6-3, 6-1
Mixed Doubles: Kate Williams and Daire O’Mahony v Isabell
Dowling and Owen Daly 6-2, 6-1.
The KBS Cup Draw and Fixtures are now available on the
Tennis Ireland
Tournament Website.
This event is sponsored by Kerry Food Ingredients, Carrigaline.

Wilson Cup - Latest
News
The Wilson Cup
Draw and Results
are now available on the
Tennis Ireland Tournament Website.
Once on the site go to
the draw tab and select your group to see the standings.
Carrigaline played
their last group fixture in the Wilson Cup on Sunday last, 21st
March. They were at home to Bishopstown whom they had drawn
with at their away fixture. Unfortunately, the only game won on
Sunday was the under 14 girl’s match. Kate Maxwell and Stephanie
Corkery put up a great fight against the Bishopstown pairing and
won 6-1 6-2.
Sam Crumplin was
not available as he had injured his hand playing rugby. Mathew
Scallon, who came in as a substitute, put in a great performance
with Daniel O’Flaherty to log a final
score of 6-1, 6-1. This result certainly did not reflect the
closeness of the match as is so often the case in tennis. The
team are very grateful to Mathew for standing in, he is
definitely one to watch in the future. All of the team were a
credit to the Club and their parents are also to be thanked for
their involvement.

Junior Interclub Tournaments - Wilson Cup & KBS Cup
Good fun with a competitive edge, and the need to
keep our juniors interested during off-season,
was the inspiration for the formation of both the Wilson (formerly Casey
Cup)
and KBS (formerly OK Cup) Junior competitions.
Both events have being going strong now since the early 90’s and were
the brainchild of founder members of Carrigaline Tennis Club who still
oversee the running of both events annually.
The
Wilson cup is a team event for under 12’s and under 14’s while the KBS
is for the under 16 age group. The success of both events has been based
on the theme of fairness and this has been managed by controlling the
entrants each year. Both Cups are effectively winter leagues for juniors
who may be a level below Munster squad status. Previous years
tournaments winners are excluded from playing to ensure that those who
do take part have a fair chance of doing well in their event. If
this can be achieved every year, then the hope would be that more kids
will be encouraged to stay playing tennis in addition to the many other
sports they will experience in the early years of life.
The
Wilson Cup runs from Late November to May each year and the KBS Cup runs
from March through May. The finals for both events are hosted by
Carrigaline Tennis club every year just after the GSK singles tournament
which is held over the May weekend. Carrigaline Tennis Club are
delighted with the success of both events over the years and look
forward to being involved with Junior Tennis in Cork for many more years
to come.
